Course Descriptions

Western Valley Elementary School Art Class

Hello! This year will be an inspiring and creative time in the art room. Each grade level will be making standards based art projects and learning about art history, art vocabulary, and connecting to other subject areas through art. Students will be contributing to collaborative art projects with their classmates, which will be displayed in the school and on the WVES webpage. They will also create many individual 2-D and 3-D art works that will be sent home after the December art show and the end of the year art show. Announcements for these art shows will be made on the WVES webpage so stay tuned!

K-5 Course Objectives:

1.      To develop a working vocabulary of art terms and concepts.

2.      To develop knowledge of art mediums and techniques.

3.      To apply knowledge and techniques to produce original art work.

4.      To be able to critically analyze and compare and contrast art qualities.

5.      To develop pride and self-worth through artistic expression.

6.      To learn to appreciate art and design in different contexts.

Students will be provided with basic supplies for their assignments but the art room can always put art supplies to good use. Please consider donating any of the suggested items to the WVES art room:

  • Markers

  • Glue Sticks

  • Any unwanted art supplies, even if they are opened or partially used.

  • Miscellaneous craft and painting supplies

  • Mat board and foam core (as used in picture framing)

  • Picture frames without glass.

  • Kleenex

  • Paper Towels

  • Tax Credit Donation (can be done through the district office. Please check the box for visual art. Funds in this category will be used for field trips and specialty art supplies, such as clay.)

  • Colored Pencils

  • Anything else you think the art room may need (fabric, yarn, wood scraps (no splinters), etc.)!

There will be a fifth grade art club this year on Friday afternoons. I believe that all of my students are artists and I treasure every single art piece made by all of them. My class is not based on art talent but on effort, self-expression, mastery of objectives, and personal improvement. I look forward to working with your student and can’t wait to see what they will create!

I strongly recommend encouraging children to create art at home. Please consider helping your student set up a creation/homework station with as many art supplies as you can afford. You can start with a simple box of crayons and some office paper. The creation station can be anywhere, in a corner of a room, on a couch, or even in a portable bag or backpack. Encouraging creative self-expression has been scientifically proven to enhance both physical and cognitive development for people of all ages.

I am very honored to be your student's visual arts teacher. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or would like to donate any art materials to the art room.

Thank you!
